Over 8 years ago, co-Founders Lena Douglas and Claire Cross were some of the only female instrumentalists in their University Music courses. They wanted to inspire more young women and gender diverse people to pursue a future in music - so they created YoWo Music.
WHAT WE DO
YoWo Music runs a Melbourne-based music programs for young women and gender diverse teens in high school. We strive to nurture confidence and highlight a viable pathway to a career in music, through providing professional female musicians as mentors.
Since 2015 we’ve have run our semester-long Band Program. Each Semester, participants are placed in a band, play original songs and covers, get inspired by professional musician mentors, play gigs, record music, gain confidence and have fun!
In 2023 we’ve expanded our programming so we can reach even more young musicians. Our new programs help young women and gender-diverse youth develop the skills they will need to build sustainable music careers, including recording, music business management and networking.
OUR IMPACT
Over 8 years, we’ve had 51 bands through the semester-long Band Program, released 2 albums, and had alumni accepted into VCA, VCASS and form their own bands.
Since the Melbourne COVID-19 lockdowns, we’ve realised the extent to which our programs are improving the wellbeing of our young cohort. Getting like-minded young people in a room to connect and play music together, means more right now than ever before.
